Worst of all, incidents of theft are increasing at an alarming rate: between 20, there has been an increase of 30.5% in the number of thefts. (Neither do I, for that matter. In France, more than 75,800 laptops and tablets are reported stolen every year. For example, I think every checkpoint will regard a baby Swiss Army pocketknife with its one inch blade as a prohibited item even though many people don't see the harm in carrying it aboard the aircraft.

I think these are the rare exceptions to the rule I think it is fair to say that most checkpoints are consistent with what is regarded as a prohibited item even though not everyone agrees with what items are considered prohibited. Unfortunately, I think some of you will encounter some TSA supervisors and lead screeners who will go overboard in their interpretation of prohibited items. However, I don't see any valid reason to have a whip inside the passenger cabin at 30,000 feet. But you have to draw the line somewhere, and I would err on the side of the cable's primary design of locking down a laptop. Could it also be used as a weapon? Certainly. The primary purpose of a laptop locking cable is to secure a laptop. I don't have a problem prohibiting these sort of items that are not specifically listed yet clearly pose a potential threat. It was a long, hard pole with a flexible piece of leather at the end that snapped pretty easily with just the flick of the wrist. An individual was carrying it through the checkpoint and we decided to prohibit it. For example, whips are not on the prohibited items list. Now that it's been a couple years, I think for the most part that TSA supervisors and lead screeners stick to the prohibited items list and don't stray away from it unless it's really something that causes a true concern. (Couldn't really influence things until I got promoted to lead screener.) In fact, I used that same exact example of a ballpoint pen being used as a weapon when I voiced my concerns that they were going overboard in their zeal. When TSA first started at my airport, it was difficult for people like me who had a year or two more experience at airport security screening to contend with brand spanking new TSA supervisors and lead screeners who were using their fertile imaginations when interpreting the potential use of items as weapons. Let's home (sic) this is an anomaly, and does not catch on at other airports. It is an anomaly. I was told this would not be allowed, as the steel cable would make it a danger - I'm not sure they would consider a Cat 5 cable equivalent, but if you ask anyone who has the requisite military training, they were probaly right - though IMO, they carry on to a ridiculous extent, as a pen or pencil could make a very effective weapon if wielded correctly.
